How did Buddhism get phrased out of india?

India is the Cradle of Buddhism but you wont find any indigenous indian Buddhists today

why is that?|||Brahmins eradicated Buddhism as well as gave a tough fight to Jainism because they did not want to lose their monopoly simple. The fight lasted over centuries, Hindu gods and mythologies were rewritten to mix up with Buddhist doctrines Buddha was shown to be avatar of Vishnu etc and ultimately Buddhism lost to majority and took roots in other Asian countries. This had to be so the teaching of Buddha were directly opposite to the existing beliefs.

Believe nothing because it is written in books.

Believe nothing because wise men say it is so.

Believe nothing because it is religious doctrine.

Believe it only because you yourself know it to be true.

- Siddhartha Gautama Buddha (563-483 B.C.)

So we lost a realistic approach to religion.|||Some of India's Hindu rulers persecuted Buddhists. There were always periods of religious tolerance in India but occassionally the less enlightened rulers were pretty savage.

Also, when the Muslims came they destroyed alot of temples and universities including Nalanda University which was extremely significant to Buddhism in India.|||Hinduism is very much a "home" religion in that one lives a normal life for the most part and practices his or her devotions at home.

Buddhism developed to where one went to study at a large monastery, living apart and away from home and family went was against the more usual customs of the Indian culture and society.

Oddly, in the West, Buddhism has become a "home" religion and Hinduism, such as the Krishna Consciousness movement, has become more monastic with the establishment of various ashrams, temples, etc.

ADD:

Esspee9 makes a very good point in that the teachings of Prince Shakiyumani did rather buck the existing system and established order even though the teachings of the Buddha and general Hinduism are very similar with only a few divergences.

namaste|||If one truly understand, there is no "this Cradle" or "that Cradle".

Hence, there is no "phrased out" or "phrased in"; for the truth does not increase nor decrease as it is eternally the same for all.|||Becuase of rise of Brahmanism and degradation of Buddhist monks|||buddhism does not believe in a creator, who can explain that|||Maybe somebody used the phrase "Get out"!
