How did Hinduism respond to the various challenges of Buddhism in classical India?

When Buddhism became popular in India, how did Hinduism change to adapt to the religious environment?|||Buddhism was there at first, then the aryans came. asoka fought a war at kalinga then he felt remorseful at killings. he converted to buddhism and preached it and spread to many places. hindu kings spread buddhism. so ur question is logically incorrect.

anyhow all throughout hindu history buddhism and jainism were given patronage by hindu kings since they were before it whether in chola period or other ones.|||u c hinduism is a inclusive religion and lot of historians say that invadors were successful in penetrating india coz of many hindus became buddhists and they chose peace. they lost fighter spirit.

so when mughals or others came they didn't have time to adapt or introspect. simple.

|||Buddhism was born out of Hinduism so there is no question of conversion as Buddha is considered to be a Hindu himself who then in search of Moksha ( freedom from cycle of life) started a new religion named as Buddhism. Also, the aryan invasion theory has been proved false. Hindus were comfortable.
